Johnny Ace Kinda Funny Game Jam - Grand Prize Winner Kinda Funny, a crew of Games Industry personalities turned YouTubers, put on the first ever Kinda Funny Game Jam and as a big fan, I had to participate. I ended up making a 3rd-person hero shooter starring one of the group’s characters, Johnny Ace who is a champion tennis player known to reside in Malta. To take the action to his home town, I referenced actual Malta landmarks to turn the island into an interesting arena for multiplayer mayhem to take place! The Kinda Funny crew and community loved the references including a very… interesting victory screen. I didn’t end up winning, but I made an action-adventure dungeon crawler with a focus on environmental puzzles. I created a narrative with a backstory cinematic and environmental story-telling through NPCs and other content that can be found during the adventure. The experience is balanced for a party of 4, so it’s a daunting task by yourself, but I was really happy with the result. We created regional tournaments that led up to the Grand Finals. I directed our Northeast regional efforts, working directly with players to coordinate games, running the tournament live stream, and directing on-camera talent. Initially we held tournaments with prizes for games such as StarCraft 2, Super Smash Bros., and Halo, but interest in other games quickly grew. Once we had enough players interested, we began a League of Legends tournament series with teams competing on a weekly basis.
